U.T. System paid Bill Powers' law firm OVER $450k during Houston land grab fiasco....

"Woe to those who devise iniquity,
And work out evil on their beds!
At morning light they practice it,
Because it is in the power of their hand."
Micah 2:1

Following last month's collapse of U.T's Houston land grab, we sent several open records requests related to the deal.  The requests are currently working their way through the Attorney General process, but U.T. did release some information last week.  Check out this gem from in response to an inquiry from Regent Eltife:

Now who, pray tell, is Jackson Walker?!?
Bill Powers, the former president of the University of Texas, is joining the Dallas-based law firm Jackson Walker as counsel.

Powers said he will continue teaching full time at UT but plans to work a limited number of hours with the appellate lawyers and those who specialize in corporate governance at Jackson Walker.

“I like being part of a team, and I like it that Jackson Walker is a large law firm with diverse practice areas but that it still focuses on Texas,” Powers, 69, told The Texas Lawbook. “I also want to contribute to the professional development of young lawyers and help the firm with client development.”
Bottom Line: Such a typical U.T. move...

  1. Forgive my ignorance, but can you spell out the impropriety here? Was the university overcharged for the services rendered? Is there a conflict of interest in hiring Powers' firm, or is this some kind of payoff or kickback? You seem to be alleging impropriety, or at least the appearance of it. Thanks
